He kissed the top of Blue's head, and she suddenly backed away and shook her whole body.

“Okay, I know,” Michel said with a resigned smile. “Too much love.”

“Not for me,” Joel said.

Michel stood and put his arms around Joel's neck.

“It's going to be okay,” he said.

“I know,” Joel replied. “Just be careful, okay?”

“I will,” Michel replied.

He was suddenly aware of people watching them, and smiled to himself, knowing that he would never have been so openly affectionate while he was still on the force.

“I love you,” he said.

“I love you, too,” Joel replied.

Then they kissed, almost desperately, as though neither of them wanted it to end. Finally Michel pulled back.

“I'll see you in a few hours,” he said. “Keep the bed warm.”
